According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Newark Liberty International Airport is now open but travelers should still check with theri carriers as many flights are still canceled or delayed.

The airport closed at 2:48 a.m due to heavy snow conditions and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported they were digging out from at least seven inches of snow. Shortly after 8:30 a.m. the airport opened again.

Port Authority officials said cargo planes may still land and depart but they will make an announcement today when commercial passenger flights return to service.

The last flight that took off from Newark was a FedEx cargo plane departing at 12:22 a.m., according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. LaGuardia and JFK International Airports are still open but no flights have left since Friday night.

Travelers looking to leave the region today should check with their individual carriers. The National Weather Service is discouraging travel until later Saturday morning.
