Boise Airport Submits Grant to Boost Air Service to Atlanta, Dallas or Houston

Boise’s new airport director said she’s turning to the federal government to better connect Idaho to points south, such as Atlanta, Dallas and Houston.

In May, Rebecca Hupp, who had extensive experience at Kansas City, Mo., Aberdeen, S.D., and Bangor, Maine, airports before coming to Boise, told BW that she was hoping to connect the Treasure Valley to specific hubs, sooner than later.

"As far as destinations, we know that there’s strong demand for service to Dallas and/or Houston. And they’re hub destinations," said Hupp. "Of course, we’d love to improve eastbound destinations, like Philadelphia or Atlanta."

This morning’s Idaho Mountain Express reports that the Boise airport, along with Friedman Memorial Airport in the Wood River Valley, are seeking a $1 million grant to increase direct air service in the region. The grant application "seeks to bring direct service between Boise and one major hub in the South or Southeast, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston or Atlanta," according to the Mountain Express. The deal would also include daily direct service between Friedman Memorial and Boise.

"Nobody would be flying from here to Texas, but they would be flying from here to Boise," Friedman manager Rick Baird told the Mountain Express.

The only way to fly from Friedman to Boise now is through Seattle or Salt Lake City.

The grant application was submitted June 8, and airport officials are expecting a decision to take anywhere from 90 days to six months.
