Delays at RI airport after security breach
July 16, 2010
WARWICK, R.I. –A passenger at T.F. Green Airport passed through a security checkpoint without being fully screened on Friday, a security breach that officials said caused significant flight delays and affected about 2,000 people.
The breach was reported around 6 a.m., when the passenger did not complete the screening process, said Jim Fotenos, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.
The concourse was evacuated and passengers had to be rescreened.
The passenger, whose name was not released, was taken into custody and questioned but has since been released, said Kevin Dillon, president of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, which operates the airport.
Dillon said the matter remained under investigation. He said there were significant delays to both incoming and departing flights, and about 2,000 people were affected.
“I am sure there are a number of passengers that were very irate over the issue,” Dillon said. “As you can imagine, it’s very difficult to individually communicate with 2,000-plus people.”
All airport operations had returned to normal within hours.
