RAWALPINDI, June 29: Apparently a deranged young man posing himself as member of the Balochistan Assembly on Friday managed to reach restricted apron of Benazir Bhutto airport where the Punjab government’s aircraft was parked, triggering security alert.
The tall young man, in his 30s, crossed all security barriers put in place by the Airport Security Force (ASF) right from Rawal Lounge to the restricted apron site.
However, the ASF commandoes had to rush to overpower him before he could cause any damage.
According to security sources, the man, who later gave his one word name Asad, first appeared at the entry point of Rawal Lounge in his Suzuki Khyber car (AC-4015) and introduced himself as MPA from Balochistan.
He was allowed and after parking his gray car in which a political party banner was lying, he managed to enter into Rawal Lounge where he was given protocol by the security and CAA staff after he identified himself as MPA again.
The sources said he was given the same protocol by the airport security and management staff at counter Number 2.
But the security alert was sounded when he was asked to stop at the exit gate of the lounge by the ASF personnel who requested him to show his boarding card and move his arms up for body search.
“Airport Security Force personnel ran after him after he thrashed them at final security check and ran towards the special aircraft of Punjab government parked in front of the Rawal Lounge.
He was overpowered by the security staff and personnel of other security agencies also reached there, a security official said and added that his shirt was torn when he scuffled with the security staff.
The ASF and officials of other top security agencies grilled him at the airport for more than six hours but could not elicit any further information from him. He is likely to be handed over to the local police for further legal action.
During search, nothing dangerous material was recovered from him except for a banner of a political party. However, his car in which he came to the airport was impounded and handed over to the police.
A senior security official said the young man looked to be mentally disturbed as he was crying to be shifted to mental hospital when he was overpowered by the security staff.
Despite efforts by the officials of security agencies, no further information related to his whereabouts or what was his motive could be known.
A departmental inquiry by the ASF was also initiated to fix the responsibility of security lapse at the airport.
