Napolitano tour to highlight anti-terrorism efforts at Port of Los Angeles
Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano was scheduled to tour a new training facility for law enforcement at sea Monday and discuss heightened security measures to combat terrorism at the Port of Los Angeles.
Napolitano was to tour the Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Police Chief Charlie Beck and other dignitaries.
The center will provide state and local agencies with updated training on maritime boardings, arrest procedures, vessel identification, searches and counter-terrorism procedures, officials said.
Instruction will include the nation’s first curricula approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and California Emergency Management Agency.
Napolitano also will remind port workers, travelers, businesspeople and community groups to be on the lookout for any unusual activity at the port as part of the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign.
Already launched at other potential terrorist targets, such as Los Angeles International Airport, Union Station and NBA games, the campaign asks public and private interests to remain vigilant in keeping the nation safe.
Napolitano was to begin her tour at 11 a.m. at the training center at 300 E. Water Street.
