Security lapse forces LA airport closures
Three terminals at Los Angeles International Airport were shut down briefly on Saturday morning after officials discovered a security guard had apparently abandoned his post at an exit lane.
Transportation Security Administration spokesperson Jon Allen told AFP that the security lapse was discovered around 4:30am local time (1130 GMT).
“One of our transportation security officers observed that an exit lane that was supposed to have been monitored by an airport contractor was unattended,” he said.
“So as a precaution we closed the checkpoints in order to give us time to check videotapes and the review of the tapes indicated that no one had entered the exit lane, so we resumed normal operations.”
Allen said the three terminals, five, six and seven, were closed for less than an hour while the security footage was reviewed.
He said TSA was investigating why the contractor left his post at the exit lane, which is guarded to ensure it is used only by arriving passengers leaving the airport and can not be used to enter the secure boarding area. – Sapa-AFP
