TSA Employee Shortage

TSA Employee Shortage

Jennifer Joas | 3/8/2012

There`s not one business in western North Dakota that isn`t hurting for employees. The same is true for the Transportation Security Administration at the Williston airport. This makes security take just as long as large commercial airports.

TSA officers are in high demand at the Williston airport, and passengers say they`re not surprised.

“Most of the time it’s like everything else in this town. Everybody is understaffed, more demand than there is people to fill it,” said Stanley Kendziorski, passenger.

The Transportation Security Administration is looking for three officers.

“The airport has experienced a lot of growth in passenger traffic. So that’s one of the reasons we are looking for three additional officers. Again, we`re looking for part time people, and sometimes it’s a little bit more difficult to find individuals whose schedules allows them to work part time and in split shifts,” said Carrie Harman, TSA Spokesperson.

Passengers at the Williston airport have increased by more than 100% compared to this time last year. Combine that with an employee shortage, and you`ve got an unpredictable wait.

“Getting through security and everything, this is actually the longest I`ve ever waited here today. Usually it goes pretty quick,” said Robert Vanness, passenger.

While the employee shortage persists, passengers say they expect to wait.

“You do have to wait a while to get in line, so you better be sure you get here early,” said Tina Reigle, passenger.
