NIAGARA FALLS — Another new air carrier will soon be landing at Niagara Falls International Airport.

Officials from the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced plans to hold a news conference at 1 p.m. today at the Falls terminal off Niagara Falls Boulevard to celebrate the arrival of Vision Airlines, a low-fare, non-stop carrier that will soon begin offering flights from the airport to Florida.

According to the NFTA announcement, Vision will launch service from the Falls facility to Northwest Florida Regional Airport and one-stop service to Miami International Airport starting Dec. 17, with rates starting at $79 each way. NFTA officials say Vision will operate twice a week flights using a Boeing 737 aircraft that could bring as many as 600 travelers to the Destin-Ft. Walton Beach and Miami areas each month.

Just last month, Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier based in Florida, announced plans to begin offering in January three non-stop flights per week between Niagara Falls and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The company will begin offering service between Niagara Falls International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Jan. 27. Flights will depart from the Falls on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Flights from Fort Lauderdale to the Falls will leave on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The Myrtle Beach flights will begin May 5, with arrivals and departures from both communities scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Spirit’s Falls operation is expected to employ between 15 and 20 workers.

Vision and Spirit join Direct Air in scheduling services at the Falls facility. Direct Air has been offering flights to Niagara Falls for several years and has been responsible for a significant portion of the passenger traffic inside the old and new terminals.
